Persona 5 Strikers Review: A Summer Road Trip Extravaganza

Even the most disciplined worker needs to take a break. And for the first time, you can do so by playing some beach volleyball! While it’s not the first sports spinoff in the Persona series, it’s the first time you’ll be able to play a competitive, side-scrolling game starring your favorite Persona 5 characters. A few months ago, we reviewed Persona 5: The Animation. We were thrilled to see a popular JRPG franchise we love make its way to the big screen. And now we’re happy to say that the game has found its way to the arcade! Persona 5 Strikers is a two-on-two fighting game developed by Atlus exclusively for Japanese arcades

The Persona series first began in 1996, and has since become famous for presenting Japanese mythological figures as characters that grow and develop. The characters are all teenagers, and the games follow their lives as they spend their days at school and with friends. The Persona series is one of the most popular JRPGs in the gaming industry, and the fifth installment, Persona 5, has become the most popular Persona yet. Although the game is targeted at young adults, it has been praised for its creativity and originality.

Persona 5 Strikers is the latest spin-off of the Persona series. It was released as a PS4 game only in Japan, and has since received an international release through the Playstation Network. It is a very different game than the mainline Persona games, with a different kind of battle system, and a much lighter tone. P5 Strikers is basically a combination of Persona 4 Arena and Final Fantasy Dissidia. You get a party of three characters from the main series and take them on a visual novel story mode, and you can also play a traditional fighting game story mode.

In 2017, Persona 5 was a landmark game for the series, taking it to the highest mainstream level. Then in 2020 came Persona 5 Royal, an improved remake of Persona 5, which added even more features and plot details to an already huge game. The ghostly thieves now return in the sequel,Persona 5 Strikers, to capture our hearts once again. Persona 5 Strikers differs significantly from Persona 5 , as the former uses a real-time combat system instead of the turn-based combat system the series is known for. This is a welcome change, however, as Koei Tecmo's Omega Force and Atlus have done a fantastic job of combining elements from both of their franchises, Dynasty Warriors and Persona, into one game. Persona 5 Strikers is one of the best JRPG games of this year. The story of Persona 5 Strikers takes place six months after the events of Persona 5. In addition, new story concepts and characters will be introduced. Ghost Thieves embarks on a summer journey through Japan to discover mysterious new happenings in the meta-world. The story is really compelling and features the full character arcs you'd expect from a Persona game.

Persona 5 Strikers review: Summer travel extravaganza

word-image-10887 Strikers borrows more elements from Persona 5than Dynasty Warriors, as the latter seems to have been a template for the real-time action game presented here, while the more complex structure and gameplay mechanics seem to be the DNA of the former. The story structure still follows the inherent timeline system of the series, but this time the pace is much faster and faster than in the previous game. Players solve the problem of the city they are in and then move on to the next stage of the journey. To accommodate this new pace, the game replaces the Confidents/Social Links feature, which previously expanded world-building opportunities, with a new Bond level meter that fills up as the story progresses or you complete certain tasks involving the main characters. As you raise your link level, you gain link points that you can spend on improving your group's skills, for example. B. to recover HP from a successful enemy ambush or to get more money after a fight. This new mechanism works from a narrative standpoint, as Strikers focuses much more on the Phantom Thieves as a group, rather than a team trying to expand their network of alliances. Moreover, Strikers does an excellent job of bringing the traditional turn-based game mechanics of Persona to real time. During combat, you can open the Persona menu to choose a special ability from your list and perform it. It works very similar to the menu system in the game Final Fantasy 7 Remake. When you're in the menu, the game freezes, giving you time to strategize how to hit your opponent's weak points or heal/use your allies. Thanks to backwards compatibility, the game also runs very well on the PlayStation 5, with short load times and a refresh rate of 60 FPS, with no hiccups or performance issues. The soundtrack is also absolutely fantastic, with new tracks and remixed versions of the original version of Persona 5 and Royal .

Old thieves, new tricks

word-image-10888 The Strikers game also features new combat mechanics. The first is Phantom Dashes, which builds on the original game by using special objects in the background to inflict extra damage. It's reminiscent of the Flowmotion mechanism in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. In the game Strikers, you can jump on the cars and make them explode or avoid the streetlights to hit your opponents. Also, there is now a special dodge button, and if you time it perfectly, you can hit your opponents with a counterattack. However, my favorite mechanic is definitely the Master Arts, a set of skills unique to each character that are performed with certain button combinations. These abilities give each character a personality, and some even evoke the characters' memories. So even if you're not using Persona skills that consume SP or HP, it's a nice aesthetic feature that makes the Personas feel like they're involved in the fight as well. Characters now have Showtime, an ultimate attack that can be performed when the Showtime meter is full. It can be padded by attacking enemies, although it would be nice to be able to skip the full animation of these attacks. They're good, but after a few viewings, I want to get back to the plot. While many Persona 5mechanics fit incredibly well in Strikers, not all mechanics are perfect; some can be a little sloppy. I loved the demon negotiations in Persona 5where you persuade enemies to switch to your side, but in Strikersthose have been replaced with a chance to drop a mask if you're defeated. I understand that you can't necessarily play negotiations with demons in real time, but this new mechanism comes across as a bit sloppy.

A royal faux pas

word-image-10889 Although you can switch reserve and main party members at any time outside of the fight, you cannot do so during the fight. There are several side missions in the game where I encountered powerful minibosses, and it wasn't until I was in combat that I saw their elemental weaknesses, and I didn't have the right group setup. For example, if this powerful opponent denies all nuclear damage and I take Makoto, who specializes in that element, she could be a plant duck; I had no way to trade her for a party member from my pool. This feature was in Persona 5, so why isn't it here? However, the biggest problem has to do with the control ofStrikers'. Oddly enough, Strikers does not include a controller remap, while other action games such as Devil May Cry 5 and the recent Ys IX:. Monstrum Nox have fully remappable keys. On the PlayStation, the interaction key is O, not X like in other games like Persona 5 Royal. It took some getting used to, but the ability to swap the two buttons would have made operation more convenient. Unfortunately, Strikers makes no reference to the new stories introduced in Royal. While the plot of Strikersdoes not contradict the events of the original Persona 5 or Royal, it seems incredibly odd to see no hint of new characters and plot points in Royal, the final version of Persona 5. This is especially strange since Showtime was a new mechanism introduced in Royaland is also present in Strikers. The new characters introduced in Strikers are great, but it would be even better if the story elements from Royalwere included in the game.

Persona 5 Strikers is an excellent pastime and a worthy successor to Persona 5 and Royal. The traditional turn-based mechanics of the franchise are masterfully translated into real-time versions that retain the soul and identity of what makes the series so much fun. Add to that a heartwarming story and a wonderful cast of characters, and Ghost Thieves' summer journey is unforgettable.
